What is a contract of employment?
A contract of employment is a legally binding agreement between employer and employee. Some information must be included in one document and other information can be delivered in instalments.
The essential items usually included in the main document:
- names of employer and employee
- date of which employment began
- date on which employee's continuous employment began
- rate of remuneration
- intervals at which remuneration is paid, that is, weekly, monthly or other.
- holiday entitlement and holiday pay
- job title
- place of work
examples of items that may be included in instalments:
- terms and conditions relating to sickness or injury, including provisions for sick pay
- terms and conditions related to pensions
- notice period
- collective agreements
